Ultimately from Arabic حَلَاوَة‎ (ḥalāwa).

Usage notes

  • The Hebrew root ח־ל־ב‎ forms words connected to חָלָב‎ (khaláv, “milk”). Since halva is usually made without milk, the Academy of the Hebrew Language recommends the spelling חַלְוָה‎. [1]
