Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *skewsḱ-, grown from *(s)kewh₁- (“to heed, look, feel, take note of”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *skawwōną (“to look, see, watch”) and Middle Persian škwh (škōh, “dignity, majesty; fear”), Persian شکوه (šukôh, “majesty, magnificence, dignity, grandeur”). Further cognate with Ancient Greek κοέω (koéō, “to note”), Latin caveō (“to be aware”), Sanskrit आकुवते (ā-kuvate, “to intend”).
