Etymology

Borrowed from an Iranian word of the form *nipātaka-. Compare Sanskrit निपात (nipāta, “descent, falling”). For the constituents compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *ní (“down”) and Ossetian фат (fat), Yagnobi pot (“arrow”).[1][2][3] First etymologized by de Lagarde.[4]
