Etymology

Borrowed from an Iranian word of the form *nipātaka-. Compare Sanskrit निपात (nipāta, descent, falling). For the constituents compare Proto-Indo-Iranian *ní (down) and Ossetian фат (fat), Yagnobi pot (arrow).[1][2][3] First etymologized by de Lagarde.[4]
