Etymology

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Old Persian 𐎴𐎳𐎫 (naft), Persian نفت (naft). Armenian նավթ (navtʿ) is a modern borrowing; the regular development from Old Armenian նաւթ (nawtʿ) would have been նոթ (notʿ), indeed found in some dialects.
