մէգ

Old Armenian

Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₃meygʰ-o- or *h₃meygʰ-eh₂- (fog, cloud). Cognate with Sanskrit मेघ (megha, cloud), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬖𐬀 (maēγa-, cloud), Persian میغ (miğ, cloud, fog), Manichaean Parthian myg, Ancient Greek ὀμίχλη (omíkhlē, mist, fog), Russian мгла (mgla), Latvian migla, and Albanian mjegull. A borrowing from the Iranian descendants is also possible, but according to Martirosyan the existence of dialectal մգլել (mglel, to cloud), in view of its internal -l-, that is reminiscent of the Greek and Balto-Slavic forms, favours the native origin.
