մէգ
Old Armenian
Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₃meygʰ-o- or *h₃meygʰ-eh₂- (“fog, cloud”). Cognate with Sanskrit मेघ (megha, “cloud”), Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬉𐬖𐬀 (maēγa-, “cloud”), Persian میغ (miğ, “cloud, fog”), Manichaean Parthian myg, Ancient Greek ὀμίχλη (omíkhlē, “mist, fog”), Russian мгла (mgla), Latvian migla, and Albanian mjegull. A borrowing from the Iranian descendants is also possible, but according to Martirosyan the existence of dialectal մգլել (mglel, “to cloud”), in view of its internal -l-, that is reminiscent of the Greek and Balto-Slavic forms, favours the native origin.
