Etymology

The root is մատ- (mat-), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₂d- (to meet, to approach), + -չ- (-čʿ-). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *mōtą. Related to մօտ (mōt).

  1. (intransitive) to approach, to come close, to draw near, to advance, to present or offer oneself, to come, to appear
    յառաջ մատչելyaṙaǰ matčʿelto advance, to come or go forward
    հուպ մատչելhup matčʿelto approach, to draw near
    ի վեր մատչելi ver matčʿelto go higher up, to ascend
  2. (intransitive) to be presented, offered, celebrated
