Etymology

From Old Armenian համար (hamar, “number”). The sense "for" is attested already in Old Armenian ի համար (i hamar), ի համարի (i hamari, “for, on account of”). The sense "room" is a semantic loan from Russian но́мер (nómer).

Etymology

An Iranian borrowing: compare Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾmʾl /āmār/, “reckoning, consideration”), Persian همار‎ (hamâr, “number, quantity, measure”), آمار‎ (âmâr, “numeration, calculation”).^[1][2][3] For further origin see Old Persian *𐏃𐎶𐎠𐎼𐎣𐎼 (h-m-a-r-k-r /*hammārakara-/). Georgian ამარი (amari) is borrowed from the same source, possibly via Armenian.
