կռիւ

Etymology

The origin is uncertain. The original meaning is “to touch, to stick to” which developed into the sense “to fight” via wrestling; see կռուիմ (kṙuim). For the sense development compare dialectal կպնել (kpnel, “to touch; to fight”).

   ի կռիւ արշաւել ― i kṙiw aršawel ― to take the field, to open the campaign

   ի կռիւ կոչել ― i kṙiw kočʿel ― to throw down one's glove, to defy, to challenge
