Etymology

The root is կիծ- (kic-), of uncertain origin, + -ան- (-an-). Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *geyd- (to stick, jab, tickle) and cognate with English kittle, German kitzeln (to tickle), Icelandic kitla (to tickle). See also Old Armenian կէտ (kēt), Middle Armenian կէտ (kēt, kind of biting fly), Armenian կիճ (kič), ճիճ (čič).

կծանեմ (kcanem)

  1. (transitive) to bite; to sting
    կծանել զհացkcanel zhacʿto cut or break bread
    ձեռն իմ կծէjeṙn im kcēmy hand itches
  2. (transitive) to torment (in the form կծել (kcel) only)
  3. (intransitive) to feel sting/pain (in the form կծել (kcel) only)
