Etymology

The word is attested only once and is derived from Middle Persian *hwlʾk' (xvarāk). Compare modern Persian خوراک (xvarāk, xorāk, food). These derive from Proto-Iranian *hwar- (to eat, consume), whence another borrowing խորտիկ (xortik); see it.
