խեթեմ

Old Armenian

Etymology

The root is խեթ- (xetʿ-), according to Ačaṙean, J̌ahukyan and Martirosyan, an ablaut grade of խայթ (xaytʿ) and thus from Proto-Indo-European *kh₂eyd-. The form խեթկեմ (xetʿkem) also belongs here.

On the other hand, Vogt (apud Klimov) derives խեթկեմ (xetʿkem) from Old Georgian ხეთქა (xetka). However, Ačaṙean considers the latter itself an Armenian borrowing.
