Old Armenian

Etymology

The origin is uncertain.[1]

According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps inherited from Proto-Indo-European *gʰōdʰ-to-, from the root *gʰedʰ- (“to unite, be associated, suit”), whence Proto-Germanic *gōdaz (“good”), Old Church Slavonic ѹгодити (ugoditi, “to please, be pleasing”), Russian вы́года (výgoda, “profit”), etc. He remarks that inheritance from Proto-Indo-European *gʰow-to-, from the root *gʰow- (“to notice, pay attention to”), whence Latin faveo (“to favour”), Old Norse gá (“to heed, mark”), is less likely.[2]

Olsen derives from Proto-Indo-European *woHto-.[3]

    կին առնուլ ի նմանէ զի գութ անկցի ― kin aṙnul i nmanē zi gutʿ ankcʿi ― to marry into his family for the purpose of strengthening the bonds of friendship
