From Iranian *gavāzan (spiked stick used for driving oxen). Compare Persian گوازه (gavāza), گاوزنه (gāvzana), Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬰𐬀 (gauuāza, ox-goad).
