Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

The sense “strong, violent” may be etymologically distinct from the sense “hollow of the hand; fist”; the former may derive from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrH-on-, from the root *bʰerH-, and be cognate with արբուն (arbun), Sanskrit भूर्णि (bhūrṇi-, zealous, wild), भुरण (bhuraṇa, active, quick, lively), Ancient Greek φυρμός (phurmós, confused mass).
