Etymology

Ačaṙyan leaves the origin open.

Ałayan derives from *արտեւ (*artew), with prothetic ա- (a-) from Pre-Armenian *rtep-, from *rdep-, from Proto-Indo-European *drep-, a by-form of the root *derep- (“to see”), +‎ -ան (-an, “instrumental suffix”); compare Ancient Greek δρωπάζω (drōpázō, “to gaze at”), δρώπτω (drṓptō, “to look at different ways”), Sanskrit दर्पण (dárpaṇa, “mirror”). See Pokorny for this root, without the Armenian. Ałayan explains the sense development as “instrument of seeing” → “eyelash”.

The sense “top, summit” is modelled on Ancient Greek ὀφρύς (ophrús, “eyebrow; brow of a hill”).
