Etymology

An Iranian borrowing, probably Middle Median because of the prothetic a-. Compare Middle Persian ʾxšʾd (depressed, troubled), Manichaean Middle Persian ʾxšʾdyh (suffering), Sanskrit क्षत (kṣata, hurt).

The word is not used independently (but is found in compounds) apart from the two idioms mentioned above.
