Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *h₂elh₁- (to grind). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἀλέω (aléō, to grind), Hindi आटा (āṭā, flour), Avestan 𐬀𐬴𐬀 (aṣ̌a, ground), Persian آرد (ārd, flour). Related to ալիւր (aliwr) and աղօրի (ałōri).
