The origin is unknown.[1] Armenian Christian tradition derives from Շամբաթ (Šambatʿ), the Hebrew name of the supposed Hebrew founder of the Bagratuni dynasty[1] Related to Persian سنباد (Sinbād), [script needed] (Sunfādh), Old Georgian სუმბატ (sumbaṭ), Ancient Greek Συμβάτιος (Sumbátios), Σαμβατίων (Sambatíōn).[2][3]
