Երուանդ

Old Armenian

Etymology

Grown with a prothetic e- from Middle Iranian *rēvant, from Proto-Iranian *raivant-, *rayivant- (possessing wealth). Compare Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬉𐬬𐬀𐬥𐬙 (raēvant, rich, splendid), 𐬭𐬀𐬫𐬌 (rayi, wealth), Sanskrit रेवत् (revat, wealthy), रयिवत् (rayivat, possessing wealth), रयि (rayi, wealth).

On the other hand, Hübschmann derived it from Middle Iranian *arvant- (swift); compare Middle Persian [script needed] (arvand, swift), Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬥𐬙 (auruuant, swift). But this is unlikely, as *arvant- would have yielded Old Armenian *Արուանդ (*Aruand).

Corresponds to Latin Orontes and Ancient Greek Ὀρόντης (Oróntēs) of Classical authors. Related to Երուազ (Eruaz).
