Երուանդ

Etymology

Grown with a prothetic e- from Middle Iranian *rēvant, from Proto-Iranian *raivant-, *rayivant- (“possessing wealth”). Compare Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬉𐬬𐬀𐬥𐬙‎ (raēvant, “rich, splendid”), 𐬭𐬀𐬫𐬌‎ (rayi, “wealth”), Sanskrit रेवत् (revat, “wealthy”), रयिवत् (rayivat, “possessing wealth”), रयि (rayi, “wealth”).

On the other hand, Hübschmann derived it from Middle Iranian *arvant- (“swift”); compare Middle Persian [script needed] (arvand, “swift”), Avestan 𐬀𐬎𐬭𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬥𐬙‎ (auruuant, “swift”). But this is unlikely, as *arvant- would have yielded Old Armenian *Արուանդ (*Aruand).

Corresponds to Latin Orontes and Ancient Greek Ὀρόντης (Oróntēs) of Classical authors. Related to Երուազ (Eruaz).
