From Middle Median *axšēn, from Iranian *xšaiθnī-, a feminine formation from *xšāy- (“to rule”); compare Ossetian ӕхсин (æxsin, “lady, mistress”). Alternatively from the homonym *xšaiθnī- (“shining, magnificent, splendid”), from *xšay- (“to shine”); compare Ossetian ӕхсид (æxsid, “dawn”).
