Etymology
Probably from Middle Low German schap and/or Middle Dutch scap (both “cupboard, cabinet, coffer”). The word-final -ф might be due to inference by the Middle High German [Term?] cognate schaf, which usually meant “barrel, keg”, however. Possibly it is merely a phonetic irregularity.
