Etymology
From Persian شترنگ (šatrang, “shatranj”), from Middle Persian ctlng (čatrang), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).
Cognate with Buryat шатар (šatar) and Kalmyk шатр (şatr), found as early as Middle Mongolian as شطرنجين (“šaṭranjin”, genitive singular).
