Etymology 2

Modified from Proto-Slavic *čisti (to read, to count), based off of the present tense (e.g. *čьtǫ (I read, I count)); the front yer *-ь- was apparently taken into the infinitive and treated as strong due to the cluster *čst- that would otherwise result, and then developed regularly into *-e-. Most of the irregularities in this verb can be explained as regular developments of the original stem *čьt- in different contexts.

Verb

честь (čestʹ) impf (perfective проче́сть)

  1. (obsolete) to read; same as чита́ть (čitátʹ)
  2. (obsolete) to consider, to think, to suppose; same as чита́ть (čitátʹ)
