Etymology
From Proto-Slavic *xopiti. Akin to Russian хапать (xapatʹ) and Slovak chápať (“to fathom, comprehend”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *keh₂p- (“take, seize, grasp, grab”). Non-Slavic cognates include German happig (“pricey”), Latin capiō, Old Armenian խափանեմ (xapʿanem).
