From Proto-Mongolic *taxulai (hare) from earlier *tapulai. Akin to Khitan 匋裏 (taul, rabbit) and Proto-Turkic *tabɨĺgan (hare), compare Old Turkic 𐱃𐰉𐰽𐰍𐰣 (tabïšɣan, hare), Turkish tavşan (rabbit).
