From the Arabic name of Egypt, Ottoman Turkish مصر (mısır), Arabic مِصْر (miṣr); following the false belief that turkeys originate from Egypt. Compare English turkey, Portuguese peru, Russian индейка (indejka), Greek γαλοπούλα (galopoúla), and Dutch kalkoen.
