клонить

Russian

Etymology

Compare Old Church Slavonic клонити (kloniti). Vasmer adduces Latin auscultō, auscultāre, Proto-Germanic *hulþaz. If so, this term apparently derives from Proto-Indo-European *ḱley- (whence also English lean, Latin clino, with unexpected retention of the plosive (for which see Fortson 2010:415f). The would-be cognate слой (sloj) shows the expected development. Vasmer also adduces Old Norse hallr, which is rather from Proto-Indo-European *kelH- (as in Latin collis, English hill, Latvian kalns) or Proto-Indo-European *(s)kel-. This etymology is incomplete.
