From Proto-Slavic *žьdati (“to wait, to await”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *g(e)id-, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰidʰ-. Compare Old High German gīt (“avarice”) and Old Prussian gēide (“they are waiting”). [1].
