From Proto-Turkic *bog- (“strangle; block, hinder”). Cognate with Tatar буа (bua).
The Proto-Turkic verbal archetype has a palatal parallel *bög- (“block, hinder”), hence Kazakh бөгет (böget), Kyrgyz бөгөт (bögöt), Southern Altai бӧгӧт (bögöt, “dam”).
