From Ancient Greek, further origins uncertain. Possibly of Proto-Indo-European origin and cognate with German Beil (“axe”) and Sanskrit परशु (paraśu, “axe”), or via Finno-Ugric from a Turkic language; see Hungarian and Turkish balta, both meaning 'axe.'
