Etymology

From Koine Greek δαγκάνω (dankánō) with metaplasm after -ώνω (-óno) verbs.^[1] From the root of δάκνω (dáknō), from Proto-Indo-European *denḱ-.
Or ^[2] from Medieval Byzantine Greek δακώνω (dakṓnō) from δάκος (dákos, “an animal which bites dangerously”), based on aorist ἔδακον (édakon), with the voicing of [k] influenced by Hellenistic Koine δαγκάνω.
