Coined in the 19th century by Jan Svatopluk Presl based on Polish czołg (“snake”) from czołgać się (“to creep, to crawl”).[1][2]

This term is used only for some genera (e.g. Lissotriton or Triturus) of the family Salamandridae. For other species of newt, the word mlok is used.
