Etymology
From Old Turkic 𐰇𐰕𐰀 (üze, “above, over”), from Proto-Turkic *hüŕ, *hüz-, *ȫŕ, *ǖŕ (“move up, on top, high above, upper part, surface”), which, according to the controversial Altaic hypothesis, is possibly derived from Proto-Altaic *ōŕi (“to rise, up”) (compare Japanese 末 (ura, “tip, top end”), Mongolian өргөх (örgöh, “to lift, to raise”)). Related to üst, yüz, yüzmek.
