Etymology

From Proto-Finnic *äijä, from Proto-Finno-Permic *äjjä. Cognates with slightly differing meanings in several related languages: Sami áddjá (“old male relative”), Udmurt ajy (ajy, “father, male”), Karelian äijä (“a lot, great, tall, many”), Ludic and Veps äi (“a lot”).[1]
