Name
Maxacteon Rudman, 1971
- Authority for current placement: original
- Current status: valid genus, or valid subgenus of Acteon according to Powell, 1979: 268 ('Unfortunately Rudman compared his genus with Pupa but not Acteon, the European type of which strongly resembles Maxacteon. Until more is known on the anatomy of tornatilis, particularly its radula, the writer compromises by accepting Maxacteon tentatively, but only at the subgeneric level'). Actually, Rudman (1971: 212) did compare Maxacteon anatomically with Acteon tornatilis, stating that 'the anatomy of Acteon tornatilis (Linné, 1766), the type species of Acteon Montfort, 1810, has been fully studied ... and it is possible to define this genus adequately. The shell is similar to Maxacteon ..., but the two genera differ considerably in anatomical features ... Maxacteon n.gen. is easily recognisable from other valid genera ... It differs from Acteon s.str. in the shape of the headshield, in the form of the radula and in the structure of the reproductive system.'
