Henry Andrew Imshaug     (1925 - 2010  )     (Imshaug)

Henry Imshaug was the curator of the cryptogramic herbarium at Michigan State University from 1956 to 1900. While at the Herbarium, he oversaw an increase in the collection from 40,000 to over 145,000 specimens. Imshaug personally collected many of these specimens from a number of locations around the world. In addition to his curator duties, Henry Imshaug supervised a number of graduate students; many of his students became distinguished lichenologists.

Dear friends,

It is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of Henry A. Imshaug, one of North America's most outstanding lichenologists and teachers. Henry died at home in Okemos, Michigan, on 18 Nov. 2010, at the age of 85 after being increasingly infirm over the past two years. He is perhaps best known these days for his extraordinary collections from the subantarctic, but his knowledge of lichens was unsurpassed when he was most active in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, and he was an extraordinary teacher of many productive lichenologists including Richard C. Harris, Clifford M. Wetmore and myself, as well as bryologist John Engel. Full obituaries will undoubtedly appear in the coming months.
