Desmopuntius Kottelat, 2013

Type species: Barbus hexazona Weber & de Beaufort, 1912.

Etymology: Desmopuntius is made from the the Greek word desmotes (= prisoner) and Puntius, referring to the barred pattern often associated with prisonners.
