Name

Crenicichla tapii Piálek et al., 2015

  • Holotype: MLP 10560.
  • Paratypes: MLP 10561 (20), 10804 (10), 10805 (2 c&s); MACN ict 9553 (2).

Type locality: Argentina, Misiones Province, lower Iguazú River above Iguazú Falls, at the mouth of arroyo Ñandú, Parque Nacional Iguazú, 25°42’11.7”S 54°25’31.2”W.

Etymology: The specific epithet tapii is a Guaraní word (tapií) meaning tapir (Tapirus) in reference to the subterminal mouth and the concave head of the species associated with its grazing semi-herbivorous mode of feeding similar to that of the tapir but highly untypical for the generally predatory Crenicichla.
