Name

Careproctus acanthodes Gilbert & Burke, 1912

  • Holotype: USNM 73332.
  • Paratypes: SU 22236 (4).

Type locality: Russia, Tatar Strait off southwestern coast of Sakhalin Island, Albatross station 4997, 47.6444°N, 141.4083°E, depth 581 m.

Etymology: The specific epithet is derived from the Greek word akanthodes (ἀκανθὼδης), meaning “spiny form”, a reference to the cactus-like prickles covering the bodies of the cotypes.
