THE CAMPAIGN OF THE SPANISH ARMADA.

All went well until July l?th, when the Armd encountered violent storm. The panish seamen declared that, t corre- sponding time of year, they had never witnessed such heavy se s ws soon roused. The lth ws clear and sunny, th light inds. Forty ships were found to be missing; nd 5ledin Sidoni sent frwrd dispatch-vessel in the direction of the Lizard, in order to look for them. The gale, however, had done little damage to the vessels which were still in company. A detailed list of the ntire Armada, s of the fleet qqsed t) it, will bc found in an appcdix at the close of this chapter.

At Lisb)n the panish fleet had consisted of 130 sail. s made up of i5 galleons; 25 tvas ,r htdks, of from 300 to 700 tons; 1 pettaclies or dispatch-vessels, of from 70 to 100 tons; 13 zabras; 4 galleasses' and 4 galleys' with guns, tud au a-re,'.to burthen of 57,8i8 tons, nd carrying ocers, seamen, and troops to the number of 80,656, ))esides volunteers, serwtnts, priests, and .,ther civilians. The supplies f,r this huge expedition included 110,()00 quintals of biscuit, 11,117 mayors; of wine, 5000 quintals of prk, 3000 quintals of cheese, 6000 quintals of fish, 4000 quintals of rice, (;000 fanegas* of beans and peas, 10,0()0 u'rohas" of oil, 21,01It) aq'obas of viuegar, ;tad 11,000 pipes of water. There were stores of sheet lead and leather for the repair of shot-holes; 21 field- pieces, with 40 mules to draw them, and 3500 shot for them; and, ts extra ordnance supplies, 7000 arquebusses, 1000 muskets, 10,000 pikes, 1000 spears, 6000 half-pikes, with spades, axes, shbvels, baskets, etc., etc., for work ashore.[1]

Nine days after the departure from (ruuua, that is, o July 20th, the Armada was 19ut nine craft short of its Lisbon strength: and of the missing vessels, txvo had never gt as far as Corunna; so that the dispersion occasioned by the gale of the 17th may have been quickly repaired, although the Armada, since leaving Lisbn, had possibly been reinfrced, and, prt,hally, had not heen rejoined by all the ships separated fw it outside ('orunmt on the night of
