From Middle Dutch sorge, sorghe, surghe, from Old Dutch *sworga, *sorga, from Proto-Germanic *surgō, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *swergʰ- (“watch over, worry; be ill, suffer”). Compare German Sorge, West Frisian soarch, English sorrow, Danish sorg, Swedish sorg.
