From Proto-Slavic *znati, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃-. Cognates include Lithuanian žinoti, English know, Ancient Greek ἔγνων (égnōn), Latin gnōscō, Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬥𐬄𐬥 (zanąn), Sanskrit जानाति (jānā́ti) and Tocharian A knānat.
