Etymology

A shortening of the obsolete yunusbalığı (literally “Jonah fish”), after the story of the biblical prophet Jonah. The form yunusbalığı is preserved in the Turkish name yunusbalığıgiller, used alongside yunusgiller for the dolphin family (Delphinidae).
