From Middle English yarowe, yarwe, from Old English ġearwe, from Proto-Germanic *garwō (yarrow, yarrow-like herbs), perhaps ultimately cognate to Proto-Germanic *gelwaz (yellow). Cognate with Dutch gerw (yarrow) and German (Schaf-)garbe.
