From Middle English yarowe, yarwe, from Old English ġearwe, from Proto-Germanic *garwō (“yarrow, yarrow-like herbs”), perhaps ultimately cognate to Proto-Germanic *gelwaz (“yellow”). Cognate with Dutch gerw (“yarrow”) and German (Schaf-)garbe.
