From Proto-Vietic *ɟaːŋ ~ *tʃɨəŋ < Proto-Vietic *tʃ-ʔaːŋ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *cʔaaŋ ~ *cʔaiŋ; cognate with Khmer ឆ្អែង (chʾaeng), Semai jeang, Khasi sh'ing. Cognates ouside Mon-Khmer include Santali ᱡᱟᱝ (jaṅ).
