A formation from vig, possibly related to Proto-Indo-European *u̯eik 'force, energy (victory, battle, etc.). Compare Latin vinco (“I win, beat”), Lithuanian veikiù (“make work”), Old High German wig (“battle, struggle”), wigant (“cripple”), Old English wǣgan (“to torment, smite”).
