From Proto-Finno-Ugric *wetä, most likely a borrowing from Proto-Indo-European *wedʰ-. Cognate to Finnish vetää, Ludian vedädä, Erzya [script needed] (veťams, “to carry, to lead”), and Hungarian vezet.
