A Proto-Finnic derivative vai + -ti "without expression of grief", from the same Proto-Indo-European root *wai (whence Proto-Germanic *wai (“woe, alas”)) occurring also in vainaja, vaiva, vaikea and vaieta. Cognates include Estonian vait, Veps vaikt´i. Compare voi.
