From Proto-Mon-Khmer *luŋ(h) ~ *luuŋ(h) ~ *ləŋ(h) (“hole, hollow; to bore, excavate”); cognate with Khmer លុង (lung, “to dig hole, drill, bore, excavate”), Central Nicobarese ong-lòng (“to drill hole”). Compare also thung lũng.
