Probably from a Vulgar Latin root *tertiolus, from Latin tertius. It may have been confused with a different root, hordeolus, that led to its Romance language equivalents, such as Spanish orzuelo, Italian orzaiolo, Catalan urçol, Romanian urcior. Compare also Galician tirizó.
